Podcast Episodes

In our first episode, we introduce you to Opportunity Hack, our 501c3 focused on solving problems for non-profits with software.  We were founded by employees in 2013 working for eBay Inc. at the time, and since the PayPal separation from eBay in 2015, PayPal employees have carried this torch by having hackathons in San Jose, Chennai, Phoenix, Austin, Timonium, Singapore, and Ireland.  Last year we held our first online and global volunteer summer internship to support students who were unable to find jobs due to COVID-19, and we also held our first virtual hackathon in November.

In the last 8 years, we have created solutions for charities that include food banks, community centers, animal adoption, immigration, education, medicine, and many more.

This podcast will educate you on problems that nonprofits face, software engineering challenges, hackathons, mentorship, and much more.

In this episode, we're going to unravel how technology can be leveraged for social good. Whether you're an experienced techie or a coding newbie, Opportunity Hack is your stage to contribute to solutions for real-world problems using technology. We're not just about code; we're about rewriting social narratives around education, health, environment, and more.

Opportunity Hack thrives on collaboration, where you share not just your code, but your ideas, passion, and insights. It's a place to enact change regardless of your background - coders, UX designers, product managers, or project managers. We're more than just coders; we're architects of a compassionate, inclusive digital future.

Today, we're peeling back the layers of Opportunity Hack's mission, and our six core values: (1) Harness the Power of Code, (2) Champion Collaboration, (3) Pursue Impact, (4) Uphold Effective Altruism, (5) Advocate for Inclusivity, and (6) Nurture a Supportive Community.

The principles of Opportunity Hack aren't merely guidelines; they are the pulsating heart of its vision, leveraging technology to elevate our shared human experience. Tune in to this episode of Opportunity Hack to understand how we're not just writing code, but writing the future.

Are you ready to hack the planet?! Opportunity Hackers are aligned for the common good, focused on delivering software solutions for nonprofits and not trying to take over the world.  In this episode, we talk with Sara, Gina, and John about their experience with hackers and Opportunity Hack.  We talk about how Hackers help us and nonprofits, how they write code in Python, NodeJS, Flutter, and anything that can solve the problem statements that we work with nonprofits to define.  We use DevPost for our hackathon (sign up at https://opportunity-hack-2021.devpost.com for our hackathon in October!), Slack to chat with each other, GitHub to open-source our code, and Heroku to allow people to use the software we create.

Opportunity Hackers are some of the most dedicated people in the world.  Thank you for the last 9 years of solving problems for nonprofits!
